Meeting called to order by Ken L at 1900hrs

Officer of the Day:  Mike R.

Meeting was put on hold so that Jack form Mass State Veterans Council could address the chapter.  He talked about a dinner being held at the Log Cabin Restaurant and that he had tickets for any member who wanted to attend.

Reading of the Bills & Financial Report:  Bill Q gave a full account of our financial status.  It was discussed and approved

Report of Service Officers: 
  • Rich L informed the chapter of his present health condition and that he will be missing some meeting and events.  His daughter Renee will keep the chapter informed.  Also, we talked about the passing of Life Member Reginald “Reggie” George who passed on July 25th.

Letters to the Chapter:  None

Report of Committees:
  • Ken L and Ron Q talked about the July 4th Hampden Ponds Parade.  It went great and had a good turnout of members.
  • Ken L also talked about the picnic at the Holyoke Soldiers Home on July 28 we served over 50 veterans and their dependents.
  • Poppies in from of Walmart will be on Sept 1st, 2nd and 3rd.  Sign up sheet will be available after the meeting.
  • The POW/MIA Candle program will be Sept 15, be there by 6pm to help with set up.  Bill Q might not be able to me it, so if you can help pick up the stuff for the service see Ken at the next meeting to arrange time to meet.

Unfinished Business:
  • Bill Q talked about the new trailer for the chapter, the size and cost.
  • Also, Bill Q talked about the chapter insurance. 

New Business:
  • Ken talked more about the Celebration at the Log Cabin on Aug 17 by the Massachusetts Veterans Council.  

Good of the Order: 
  • Ken talked about sending a check to Reggie’s family from the chapter.
  • ​Scott P received this new Life Member jacket.

Reading of the Bills & Financial Report:  a full account of our financial status was read and approved

Report of Service Officers:  group was informed that Jack Rice’s daughter had passed.  Chaplin Laurie to send a card from the unit.

Letters to the Chapter:  None

Report of Committees:
  • July 4th Hampden Ponds Parade step off is 10am we will be meeting at the plaza. Uniform for the day is black t-shirts, cammies and boonie hats.
  • Ken L reminded everyone that the picnic at the Holyoke Soldiers Home on July 28 be there for 10:45am, we will be wearing white VVA shirts.
  • Veterans council meets are cancelled for the summer.
  • Going to try to get our pictures in the paper for all events we do this year.

Unfinished Business:
  • Lester talked about a trailer he has that he would be willing to sell to the unit.  Putting it on hold till next meet and to see what Bill’s progress on the paperwork.
  • Ideas were talked about for a new place for chapter meeting.  Tom talked about a place.

Report of Committees:  
  • Ken & Ron talked about the banners and how great they look. The group talked about have a plaque done to give to Westfield G&E for their help.
  • Ron Q asked the group about getting a vehicle for some of the members who have trouble walk to ride in for parades. 
  • Fred talked about the Memorial Day program.  Next year there will be only 4 essay winners instead of 6 with the school changes.  Next year to have all the winning essays published in the Local Veteran Newspaper.
  • Ken L reminded everyone that the picnic at the Holyoke Soldiers Home on July 28, 2018.
  • ​July 4th Hampden Ponds Parade step off is 10am. 

Unfinished Business: 
  • Ken L brought up discussion about buying new Unit patches will be put on off till we use up the old ones first.
  • Bill Q talked about the details for the trailer for the unit.  It is being put on hold till all the paperwork with the unit's name VVA Chapter 219, Inc. is all complete
  • Ken L taked about Veterans Council meeting.  

New Business: 
  • Renee order business cards for the unit that can be passed out to each member.

Letters to the Chapter:   Rolling Thunder Newsletter; Letter from Mayor Brian Sullivan & Newsletter from Chapter 111

Report of Committees:  
  • Kenney talked more about the bannor and poles.  
  • ​Upcomming events and dates were discussed.  (VVA Day April 7th; Candle Lite Service Sept 15th)
  • ​Fred talked about the upcoming Memorial Day Essay contest and SOP for making sure we don't have any problems this year.  Final names need to be in by April 30, 2018.
  • ​Bill Taked about Nomanation for Election for New Officer for 2018.  Rich was voted as chairman for the elections.  Next month we will start taking name for new officers.

Unfinished Business:
  • Bill Q talked more about the change in head wear to go with our BDU's for events & parades.  He brought in two examples of different styles for the group to choose from.  
  • Bill Q talked more about the new black shirts and there was more discusse about the white shirts.

New Business:
  • Kenny talked about cookout (dates to choose from July 21, July 28 or Aug 4) Laurie will make up a shopping list.
  • ​Fred talk about the Kilties band being moved up in the parade closer to the units.
  • ​Tom talked about being able to down load the application for Scholorship on our website.  It can be found on the home page.
  • ​Mike mention that the Holyoke Soldiers Home lifted it band on sick people visiting.
  • ​Winter Thaw Party was discussed and date is still TBD.
  • ​Ken talk about the group talking about helping out the VFW with Bingo at the Holyoke Soldiers Home
  • ​Mike talke about the unit doing

Report of Service Officers:  Freddy is recovering, Rich, Scott & Renee are out with the flu and Kenny is doing good.

Report of Committees: 
  • Kenney talked more about the bannor and poles.  Request quotes for poles described poles with cap; approx 15ft; city needs to help installing  poles; picture of veterans still having difficult wtih contacting families.
  • Discussion of a light for ceremony, what needs to be done to take a look a it.  Jim wants the key for the light, Kenny to meet with engineers.
  • Cook out at the Holyoke Soldier's Home will be July 28th.
  • Vietnam Recognition Day Ceremony is April 7th.
  • Winter Thaw Party was discussed for May 5th 1600 hrs.; dinner band will be there eat 1600hrs - 1630hrs.  Call Mike if you are planning to attend, food will be Chicken or Deep fried Turkey.
  • POW/MIA Candle Light Vigil Ceremony will be Sept 7th.
  • Ceremony for 104th's 100 year anniversary will be in either April or May.
  • Nomination were held for new officers; Kenny for President, Ron for VP, Bill for Treasurer, Tom for Secretay and Jim, Freddy, Rich & Mike for Board of Directors.

New Business:
  • Poppies out side of WalMart in Westfield will be March 30 through April 1.  Please sign up for a time slot. 
  • March 2nd is Veteran's Appreciation day at the Springfield Thunders Birds game.
  • February 25th JFK Memorial Purple Heart of Holyoke 1400 hrs contact Bill Q.
  • Patricia Cressotti wife of Life Member Ronald Cressotti passed away, members of VVA 219 to make donation to Southwick Fire Department in her name.

Unfinished Business:  
  • Mikme Ripa sent Renee a copy of the card that the Membership will use to send out to people from the unit.  Renee is working on it.

  • Kenney & Ron talked more about the Hometown Hero bannors.  Westfield G&E is will to help with the install of the poles, meeting with City & Westfield G&E, 20 working days to manufacture poles, hoping to have this ready for Memorial Day.
  • Cook out at the Holyoke Soldier's Home will be July 28th.
  • Vietnam Recognition Day Ceremony is April 7th @ 1300hrs at Parkers Memorial Park, Westfield, MA.    Springfield VVA Chapter 111 will hold theirs ceremony on April 8th.

  • Adding a page to web site showing uniforms worn by chapter for events.

  • Christmas Cards for life members and politieians who help out the unit through out the year are being worked on by Mike R & Renee P.

  • Meeting was put on hold so member could hold Voting for New Officer.  Voting was completed and the follow were vote in to office:

  • Kenny Reported on the Poppies, it went very well and we collected a lot money for the Memorial Day Essay Winners.
  • ​Fred talked about the Memorial Day Essay Contest and what should the subject.
  • Ron talked more about the Hometown Hero bannors. 
  • Cook out at the Holyoke Soldier's Home will be July 28th.
  • Bill Q talked about the Vietnam Recognition Day Ceremony which is on April 7th @ 1300hrs at Parkers Memorial Park, Westfield, MA.

  • ​Renee looking in to sending out cards to member who dont regularly attend the meetings to remind them about up coming events.  Also about putting our events on the Westfield Community Calender.

  • Ken L talked about the Patriot Day 104th program. 
  • Mike R reminded everyone about the WWI Anniversary Tribute by Small Plant Dancers on May 19th.
  • Ron Q asked the group about getting a vehicle for some of the members who have trouble walk to ride in for parades. 
  • Memorial Day program for May 28th was discussed.  Ken L asked for a count of who will be attending, we are hoping for good weather and a big turnout.  Everyone needs to be at Mestek for 9:30am.
  • Ken L also reminded everyone of the Memorial Day Church services on May 27th. 
  • Ron Q talked about the Banner Project and we are hoping this will be ready for Memorial Day, but it might not.

Unfinished Business: 
  • Ken L brought up discussion about the new Unit patches.  It was voted on to table the matter till June’s meeting.
  • Discussion was also brought up about the new trailer for the Unit to store all the stuff in and where it will be kept.  This was also voted to table for June’s meeting.

New Business: 
  • Mike talked about money for supplies and stuff we need for meetings and events for the Unit. 
  • Norm asked the group about donating money to the Special Olympics.  Mike R spoke about the Chapters policy on Donations.
